Asleep at the cash register

The question of what role Newark's City Council played in the shady land sales for which Sharpe James now stands indicted was brought up by Sharpe himself when the indictment was imminent.

Plainfielders may want to make note that the Council indeed played quite a role -- including at one point allowing 18-inch clearances between construction on adjacent residential lots.

But the Council and the Mayor were not alone in all of this. Also implicated are the economic development officials, the corporation counsel and Newark's business administrator.

All this ground and more is covered by Joan Whitlow, the Ledger's woman at City Hall, in her Friday column.

As she points out, "a lot of people had to be asleep at the cash register."

Nice turn of phrase Joan!

I'm keeping that one handy.
