Robert Newbold, former Bethel Presbyterian pastor, dies

Plainfielders will be saddened at learning from this morning's Courier of the passing of the Rev. Robert Newbold, Jr., former minister of Bethel Presbyterian Church.

Known to many as 'Bob,' Rev. Newbold served for many years in leadership positions in the Presbyterian Church (USA) in its New York offices.

In 1968, he became associate executive secretary for the denominational General Assembly's Department of Ministerial Relations.

From 1973 to 1975, he was associate director of the denomination's Council on Administrative Services and then became an Associate Stated Clerk until his retirement in 1991. In this last position, he reported directly to the Stated Clerk, the chief executive position of the Presbyterian Church.

Throughout his years of service to the national denomination, he was the faithful shepherd of Plainfield's Bethel Presbyterian Church.

The funeral will be tomorrow (Friday) at noon at Bethel Presbyterian Church, East 5th Street and Roosevelt Avenue. Visitation will precede the funeral.
