Labor Day 1998: One for Plainfield's record books

One Labor Day that made Plainfield's record books is a day no one will ever want to repeat.

A tree fell on the roof of long-time Zoning Board member Al Jackson's house at West 9th Street and Central Avenue.

Another tree was blown over into Central Avenue between Stelle Avenue and Randolph Road.

Nine years ago, on Labor Day 1998, a tornado swept through Plainfield, uprooting trees everywhere.

Homes were hit, at least one being made uninhabitable. Cars were crushed. Sections of the city were without power for days.

With crucial traffic lights out at many busy intersection, police were nearly overwhelmed directing traffic.

Crews from other communities pitched in to help Plainfield's valiant DPW workers cut up the fallen trees and clear the streets, a chore which took days.

PSE&G was aided by crews from out of state utilities who came to town to help clear up fallen power lines and restore power.

It was truly a Labor Day never to forget and never to want repeated.
