Crime: Another shooting as report touting decline is issued

Plainfield had another shooting Friday night in which an unidentified man was wounded twice.

Police stabilized the victim and kept him alive until an ambulance from Somerset Medical Center arrived to transport him to an area hospital, in critical condition.

The shooting is the second to occur in the 700-block of East Second Street in the past six weeks. Another man suffered five gunshot wounds in late July in the same area.

Meanwhile, the news comes as the state police released the UCR figures for 2008 (see story here), and Director Martin Hellwig noted that Part I crimes (aggravated assault, rape, murder, robbery, arson, burglary, larceny and motor vehicle theft) fell overall through this past Friday.

However, burglaries increased by 70 percent. This is the category that includes home invasions, several of which have made headlines in the past year, and perhaps worry residents more than drug-related shootings.

Hellwig was quoted as saying --
"Two thousand and nine will probably be the most successful year in recent history. We're going to be in a very good position."
Isn't there some saying about chickens and counting...?
