Alrick Brown, Indira Bailey recognized for achievements

Alrick Brown is an acclaimed filmmaker who gives back to his community.

Indira Bailey (center) is an outstanding artist and teacher.

Plainfielders filmmaker Alrick Brown and artist and teacher Indira Bailey have both been recently recognized for achievements in their respective fields.

Alrick, a PHS graduate who wrote and directed the Sundance Film Festival award-winning Kinyarwanda, was recently honored with the Governor's Jefferson Award for volunteerism for educational outreach underwritten by Verizon.

Alrick has been a consistent supporter of mentoring for young people and helped kick off P-PAL's youth mentoring program, 'Plainfield's Promise', which showcased success stories with Plainfield roots that have made, and continue to make, an impact on the community locally and globally.

Along with other nominees from across New Jersey, Alrick received his award at a ceremony at the Newark Museum on May 1, presided over by Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno. Check out Alrick's website here.

INDIRA BAILEY

Artist, teacher and Plainfield native Indira Bailey learned early in May that she has been chosen Essex County Teacher of the Year for 2012. The news was made in an announcement by the principal of her school, Bloomfield Tech in Bloomfield.

Indira, who has been honored with two Fulbright fellowships -- one in South Africa and a second in Morocco -- has developed a large body of work over the years, constantly drawing inspiration from ordinary people going about their daily lives.

Being Essex County Teacher of the Year automatically enrolls her in the judging for New Jersey Teacher of the Year, for which we wish her the best of luck.
