Dems do double-dutch as campaigns kick off

Double Dutch is a team sport requiring fancy footwork.

Double Dutch jump rope may come to mind as Plainfield's Democratic campaigns this week kick off the final fall push toward the November general election.

Supporters of mayoral candidate Adrian Mapp will gather this afternoon at 5:00 PM at the home of Rick and Belinda Smiley to kick off the fall phase of the mayoral campaign.

Mapp, who won the June Democratic primary, will face off against Republican candidate Sandy Spector and two independent candidates, D. Scott Belin and Mustapha Muhammad.

On Thursday, District 22 Democrats will gather at the Italian-American Club in Scotch Plains from 6:00 to 8:00 PM to kick off the fall phase of the campaign for Sen. Nick Scutari and Assembly candidates Jerry Green and Linda Stender.

The event is open to all and will feature hot dogs and hamburgers in the classic political campaign fashion. Of course there will be speechifying and opportunities to sign up to volunteer and take lawn signs.

This year's calendar is also complicated by the special October 15 election to fill the U.S. Senate seat left vacant by the death of Sen. Frank Lautenberg. That race pits Newark's mayor Cory Booker against Tea Party favorite and former Bogota mayor Steve Lonegan.

Summer's over, let's get to work!

Dan,

You are correct, it is time to get to work on building a better Plainfield. Our campaign has already begun the hard work of listening to our citizens, meeting folks and understanding the issues, as well as formulating solutions to some of the challenges before us in the Queen City. I look forward to a campaign about the issues and discussions of how to move our great city forward. We are reaching out to all of the candidates in the mayoral race to encourage them to participate in forums, in all four wards, to discuss the issues, and their ideas of resolution. Doing so will provide opportunities to evaluate those wishing to be our next mayor, and allow our citizens to cast their vote based on qualifications, dedication, ability and vision. We also are encouraging the community groups in the city to sponsor a forum in one of the four wards. The burden of sponsorship should not rest only on the shoulders of the League of Women's Voters and the NAACP. The democratic process should be encouraged to include as many groups and participates as possible.
