Frontiers MLK breakfast features Newark mayor Ras Baraka

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka will be featured at the
2015 Frontiers International MLK Breakfast.

This year's 39th annual MLK Memorial Breakfast will feature as guest speaker Newark's new mayor, Ras Baraka. The much looked forward to event is sponsored each year by the Plainfield Area Club of Frontiers International and is set this year for Monday, January 19.

Ras Baraka was elected Newark's 40th mayor this past May and took office on July 1. A graduate of Howard University, with a master's degree from St. Peter's in Jersey City, Baraka has an extensive background as an educator. He taught elementary school for ten years and was principal of Newark's Central High School from 2007 to 2014.

A former deputy mayor during the administration of Sharpe James, Baraka also served as a Council member for the South Ward until being elected mayor.

A longtime advocate for gang intervention and prevention, Mayor Baraka was instrumental in Newark's first Cease Fire/Peace Initiative in 2004 and chaired the first national Hip-Hop Political Convention, also held in Newark.

Besides his anti-crime initiatives, Mayor Baraka is concerned with developing fair housing initiatives in Newark and reducing the disparity between low- and moderate-income housing and market-rate housing in the Brick City.

The breakfast gets under way at 8:30 AM, Monday, January 19, at the Plainfield High School cafeteria. Tickets are $15/person and $10/Seniors and Students.
