Council looks to move South Avenue redevelopment forward

The proposed South Avenue redevelopment area
would abut the existing Plainwood Square Park.

Plainfield City Council will take up the proposed South Avenue redevelopment plan at next Monday's business meeting.

The plan, which is put forward in proposed ordinance 2015-11 would designate a large swath of land on the south side of the street between two existing apartment buildings as "in need of redevelopment".

If passed by the Council, the ordinance would be up for a public hearing and final vote at the Council's April 13 business meeting.

The area was the subject of a proposal discussed at a Plainwood Square Merchants meeting last summer (see my post here), which, if successful, would bring hundreds of new apartments to the area.

For those familiar with businesses that are (or used to be) along the street, the new development would replace the former ERA Queen City real estate office, Laggren's, The Netherwood (formerly Cafe Vivace), the Dutch Dry Cleaners, Margie's Cake Box and the catering facility next to it. Many of these properties have sat vacant for years.

Council meets at 8:00 PM, Monday, March 9, in the Courthouse/Council Chambers at East 4th Street and Watchung Avenue.
