Further thoughts on safety at Council meetings

The chair has a huge responsibility for those at a meeting.

A further thought comes to mind with respect to safety at
Plainfield City Council.

The final responsibility for attending to the issues surrounding the safety of the individual Councilors and the public at the Council meetings -- whatever their venue -- rests with the presiding officer, the Council President.

Assuring that the meeting is run with firmly with decorum and fairness is the responsibility of the chair.

Making sure that everyone knows the boundaries of appropriate speech is the responsibility of the chair.

The message that Councilors' persons are inviolate must be delivered clearly by the chair.

Ensuring Councilors treat each other with respect and dignity depends on the chair's enforcing the rules fairly and even-handedly.

Are there enough police on hand? Should there be more? This is the chair's call.

Even though the meeting is adjourned, the chair needs to be responsible for the conduct of those present until the crowd disperses, calling on police support if needed.

Isn't that just common sense?
