As we head into the weekend before the Primary election, campaigning for up-ticket ofices spike on Wednesday with three events in Plainfield residents took part.
MAYOR MAPP WITH HILLARY IN NEWARKThe Primary Election is on Tuesday, June 7. Polls will be open from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Democrats will gather after the polls close at their headquarters, 31 Watchung Avenue, to watch the returns come in. All are invited.
Plainfield Mayor Adrian O. Mapp was among dignitaries (including most of the state's Black mayors) who gathered at Rutgers-Newark on Wednesday to hear Hillary Clinton lambaste Donald Trump as a 'fraud' and a 'scam' (see the press coverage here). Clinton gave attendees a glimpse of the rough-and-tumble campaign rhetoric we will be seeing after -- as expected -- she clinches the Democratic nomination with next Tuesday's primaries in New Jersey and California.
BILL CLINTON AND WANNABE 'VIP' AT UNION COUNTY COLLEGE
While Hillary was in Newark, former president Bill Clinton stumped on her behalf at Union County College in Cranford, where a number of Plainfielders were in the crowd. (Mayor Mapp managed to make both events.) Clinton took a poke at Trump's campaign slogan (Make America Great Again), pointing out Trump's imaginary past wasn't so great for everyone. One amusing incident at the rally reported to me by several attendees: A Former Important Person from Plainfield wangled their way into the VIP section, though they didn't have the required colored wristband. When spotted by security, which was strong because Clinton is still a federally-protected public figure, the VIP wannabe was escorted away.
BONNIE WATSON COLEMAN IN PLAINFIELD
In the evening, Mayor and First Lady Mapp hosted about 70 guests at a fundraiser and pep rally in their home for Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman. Coleman, who is already making her presence felt in Washington even though this was her freshman term, gave spirited remarks in support of Hillary Clinton and the "Column A" Democratic slate in next Tuesday's Primary election.
Also speaking were Freeholder candidate Linda Carter, and City Council candidates Rebecca Williams (for citywide at-large) and Charles McRae (for Ward 3)
Watson Coleman's husband Bill, a former Plainfield resident, also attended and renewed many old Plainfield acquaintances.
